Marianne falls pregnant, but the child dies soon after. She tries to make her way alone in the world, but ends up with Oskar, who was certain all along that she would not be able to resist his love. Horváth borrows a popular construct from formula fiction to describe the conditions that allowed fascism to emerge in Vienna in the early 1930s.
