GESCHICHTEN AUS DEM WIENER WALD

Ödön von Horváth’s most popular play tells the story of Marianne, the daughter of a toy shop owner, who is to be married to the butcher, Oskar. On the day of her engagement, she makes the acquaintance of Alfred, an unemployed rascal whose ambitions do not go beyond betting and being kept by women.

Marianne falls pregnant, but the child dies soon after. She tries to make her way alone in the world, but ends up with Oskar, who was certain all along that she would not be able to resist his love. Horváth borrows a popular construct from formula fiction to describe the conditions that allowed fascism to emerge in Vienna in the early 1930s.
