Shortly before the end of the war in 1944, Veronika and her husband, Leo, are marched out of their castle in Slovenia by partisans of Tito – never to be seen again. In the well-known Slovenian author’s novel, published in 2011, five people paint a picture of the fascinating, vibrant young woman. An officer, Veronika’s mother, the German Wehrmacht physician, the domestic helper and a partisan all describe their strategies for maintaining a private haven in the midst of war. Until the pull of history tears this illusion away.
