STADT DER AFFEN
Ambiguous, surreal and poetic, blunt: Belgian director Lies Pauwels works with actors and laypeople to bring extraordinary theatrical universes to the stage. She is now developing her first evening of theatre for the Burgtheater. Eight Viennese teenagers and young adults who are hearing impaired are rehearsing together with the ensemble.

The piece will emerge directly from the participants’ input during the rehearsal process. They practise communicating in a situation where communication flounders: when the spoken word cannot be heard directly and, vice versa, sign language is nothing more than a collection of meaningless gestures. For STADT DER AFFEN (CITY OF APES), theatre needs to unlearn a lot of what it thinks it knows and is capable of: a certain logic of speech, of communication and of power.
