The Who and the What
Akademietheater
US author Ayad Akhtar’s fiery, multilayered work THE WHO AND THE WHAT shines a light on Islam’s view of women and their role in society. Atlanta, US South: Afzal, a father, and his two grown daughters. The widowed, Pakistan-born patriarch has worked his way up from a taxi driver to a business owner. A Muslim who is somewhat liberwal, yet holds very rigid views, he lovingly cares for his daughters. Zarina, the older of the two, is a promising young author. But when Afzal comes upon her current manuscript, trouble ensues. Her novel humanises Mohammed. For Afzal, the issues she raises are pure blasphemy.
