Hermann und Dorothea
Goethe’s epic poem HERMANN AND DOROTHEA, like his tragedy IPHIGENIA IN TAURIS, tells the story of refugees driven into exile by war. The residents of a small German town are confronted with a massive influx of people who are fleeing the Revolutionary Wars and have now arrived on their doorstep. One of these refugees is Dorothea. Hermann, the son of the town’s innkeeper, meets this extraordinary young woman and, following a shared experience, is a changed man.
This acclaimed staged reading with Maria Happel and Martin Schwab has not been performed in a while but is now back at the Burgtheater.
