Maja Haderlap’s latest novel begins with a woman’s return to her family home in southern Carinthia: Mira has to prepare her aged mother to move out of the house she has lived in for decades. The difficult encounter between mother and daughter takes Mira back to her childhood, a period permeated by the patriarchy and Catholicism. Unresolved conflicts rise to the surface. At the same time, they provide a glimpse into her grandmothers’ life stories, which were never talked about in the family. One was a day labourer, the other a partisan – what they share with Mia is the struggle for autonomy. The reading is followed by a discussion about the importance of language and politics in literature . Johanna Öttl (Alte Schmiede Wien literature programme) talks to Maja Haderlap.

In collaboration with Alte Schmiede Wien and Suhrkamp Verlag
